EDGES. Charlotte and Celeste filmed an improvisation at this iconic Grinnell College landmark. Prompt: Edges. Each artist then took the raw material and made their own edit of the material, which each then posted. Purpose: To prompt a discussion about the different compositional choices being made in the arrangement of the material as a tool for developing composition skills. May 25 2017.
FORGIVE ME FOR EATING THE MOON. Comic by Charlotte Richardson-Deppe. Calligraphy pen and colored pencil on paper. June 2 2017. “Forgive me for eating the moon” was the prompt for Mujeres en Ritual in their site-specific improvisation at the Mexico/US border in Tijuana as part of Celeste’s residency with the company. Charlotte, not at the site, responded to the same prompt through the medium of a comic. Discussion about how the prompt took on different weight/meaning based on where the prompt was given. (Grinnell, Iowa or the Mexico/US border)

RESPONSE DRAWINGS to skype collaboration session between Celeste Miller/Dora Arreola/Mujeres en Ritual and Charlotte Richardson-Deppe. Drawings by Charlotte Richardson-Deppe. In virtual attendance at the Mujeres en Ritual residency, Charlotte captured, through action drawing, the creative process as it unfolded. Challenges for this interaction was the difficulty of internet access.
I BROUGHT SAND HOME IN MY SUITCASE. Video by Celeste Miller. June 11 2017. Returning from the Tijuana residency with Mujeres en Ritual, Celeste created choreography based on the site specific improvisation at the border. She created this short video by cutting between the actual site footage, with a choreographic reconstruction that later became part of the evolving choreography for the stage work.
VIDEO EXCHANGE: Water Mermaid’s Tale. Spontaneous Distance Dance Exchange with Julie Rothschild via private Facebook Group MAPS Anew. Screenshots of videos/Facebook posts here. June 14 2017–June 23 2017. In this exchange each choreographer continued to develop their own work, by creating responses to the other’s work.

Celeste and Charlotte skyp-ed into a rehearsal being presented for a small audience for feedback. They stayed online for the audience discussion. The drawings were live action drawings of the rehearsal.

DOODLE RESPONSE Feedback to Celeste’s Text and Movement Solo. Drawings by Anne Rogers and Charlotte Richardson-Deppe, screenshots from video of Celeste. Pen on paper, digital screenshots. July 13 2017. Charlotte extended the “doodle response” technique by sharing it with her colleague. Using a video of Celeste’s solo, Charlotte and Anne used the Doodle Response method.

Women at Water’s Edge/Mujeres al Filo del Agua: Oracle Response. Screenshot from Celeste’s response video layered over Miroslava’s original solo. Danced by Miroslava Wilson during the Grinnell College WAWE Residency (July 1-5 2017); dance response and video editing by Celeste Miller on August 1 2017. This video layer then became a source to create stage choreography. Use of video layering allowed Celeste to develop the duet material in a way completely unlike working in a studio with the other dancer.
